Does home insurance cover storm damage to my roof?

8 Things to Know About Insurance and a Storm Damaged Roof

In most cases, home insurance covers sudden storm or cyclone damage to a roof. It usually does not cover gradual wear and tear. Your policy wording decides, so always check it. Here are eight things to know.

What is usually covered

  1. Sudden damage. Storm, cyclone, hail or fallen trees.
  2. Wind damage. Sheets or tiles lifted or torn off.
  3. Resulting water damage inside the home may be covered, depending on the policy.

What is usually not covered

  1. Wear and tear. Gradual leaks from age, rust or worn flashings.
  2. Poor maintenance and pre existing damage.

What to do after a storm

  1. Take photos before anything is moved, and make the area safe.
  2. Make temporary repairs and keep the receipts. A tarp is a common example. Then contact your insurer as soon as possible.
  3. Get a written quote or report from a roofer. Do not start permanent repairs until your insurer approves, unless it is urgent.

Help with your claim

Some roofers provide written assessments and quotes that support insurance claims, plus emergency tarping across Darwin, Palmerston and the rural area.
