How long does it take to build a pool?

7 Stages of a Pool Build, and How Long Each Takes

Most pools take around 8 to 14 weeks from approval to swimming, depending on the type and the weather. A fibreglass pool can be in the ground in days once the site is ready, while a concrete pool takes several weeks of staged work.

The 7 stages, start to finish

  1. Design, quote and contract. Around 1 to 3 weeks.
  2. Approvals. Around 2 to 6 weeks.
  3. Excavation. Around 2 to 5 days.
  4. Shell installed, or steel and concrete poured. Anywhere from 1 day to 3 weeks.
  5. Plumbing, electrical and equipment. Around 1 to 2 weeks.
  6. Fencing, paving and finishing. Around 1 to 3 weeks.
  7. Fill, balance and handover. Around 1 week.

These are typical estimates. Your builder should confirm the timing for your pool.

What can slow a build down

  • Wet season storms and saturated ground
  • Approval delays or missing paperwork
  • Rock or poor soil found during excavation
  • Access problems for machinery or a crane
  • Supply times for tiles, equipment and fencing

Plan ahead

The dry season is the busiest time for pool builders, so booking early gets you the build window you want. See when to build a pool in Darwin.
